Box Score McPherson, Kan. – Junior forward Brent Mulford scored the game winning goal in the 77th minute to propel the Bulldogs past Kansas Wesleyan University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at McPherson Stadium.

“This was a good result for us today,” said McPherson head coach Doug Quint. “It puts destiny in our own hands.”

“Defensively we continue to play soundly. To have only conceded six goals in ten games is pleasing. We did a good job keeping their play in front of us and limiting them to long range shots.”

The Bulldogs were a determined team in a physical match against their rival Kansas Wesleyan University.

Senior Armando Rodriguez put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard quickly, when he received a pass from Brent Mulford and buried it into the back of the net to put McPherson on top, 1-0, at the 5:26 mark of the first half.

Rodriguez’s goal is his team leading ninth of the season, giving him 22 points on the year.

McPherson held an aggressive KWU side to five shots in the first half and entered the locker room with a 1-0 first half lead.

Kansas Wesleyan broke the McPherson shutout in the 60th minute as Arturo Guizar dribbled around three defenders and placed the ball around the diving Blake Jett to tie the game at one.

17 minutes later freshmen defender Michael Phillips centered a ball into the six-yard box that found the head of Brent Mulford, who buried it into the back of the net to give McPherson a 2-1 lead.

Goalkeeper Blake Jett made his tenth start in net for the Bulldogs, recording five saves and allowing one goal to improve his season goals-allowed average to 0.559 per contest.

With the win, McPherson improved their record to 3-0 in KCAC play, 9-1 overall.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday evening when they travel to North Newton to play Bethel College. Kickoff is set for 7:00p.m.
