Box Score North Newton, Kan. – An early goal from senior forward Armando Rodriguez and a couple of saves from sophomore goalkeeper Blake Jett lifted the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory against Bethel College on Wednesday night at Thresher Stadium.
“I thought we did a good job tonight keeping possession of the ball and creating scoring chances,” said McPherson head coach Doug Quint. “We were efficient with eight of out 16 shots on frame. We just need to do a better job converting those shots.”
“Defensively we did a good job not letting them in behind us. There was a scary moment at the end of the first half, but Blake came up with a nice save.”
The win improves the Bulldogs to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the KCAC, while Bethel drops to 2-6-4 overall and 0-3-1 in KCAC action.
After controlling possession for the initial 25 minutes, the McPherson pressure paid off as Armando Rodriguez was able to find the back of the net off a pass from Alex Toro to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage. The Bulldogs had quality chances to extend their lead, but were unable to convert those opportunities into goals.
Bethel had a chance to tie the match at the end of the first half, but could not convert as goalkeeper Blake Jett made a diving save.
Rodriguez’s goal was his team leading 10th of the season and improved his goals per game average to 0.91 on the seasons. Rodriguez also led the team with five shots, including two on frame.
Jett recorded two saves in goal for the Bulldogs en route to recording his sixth shutout of the season and second in three games.
The Bulldogs resume KCAC action on Saturday, traveling to Wichita to face Friends University. Start time is 8:00 p.m.
