Box Score McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s volleyball team started strong against the Bethany College Swedes on Thursday night before McPherson allowed Bethany to pull its way back into the match and force a fifth set. The Bulldogs survived with a dominant fifth set to win the match, 25-23, 25-18, 16-25, 17-25, 15-9.
“We played well. Three of the five games we played hard start to finish,” said McPherson head coach Susan Barton. “We kept Bethany out of their system and kept their hitters from having a big night. Overall, I was pleased.”
The win improves the Bulldogs record to 6-15 (5-8 KCAC), while Bethany drops to 9-20 (6-8 KCAC).
McPherson received another impressive performance from freshman Natalie Boss as she tallied 14 kills on 43 attempts. Freshmen setter Lindsey Linnebur finished the match with 15 assists, and was a force at the net with a career high nine blocks, including eight solo blocks.
Three Bulldogs had double figure digs led by sophomore libero Brooke Wedel with 20, along with Kelley Green and Kaylee Joseph with 15.
McPherson recorded a match high 13 kills in set one en route to a 25-23 win. The set remained close throughout until a host of Swedes errors swung the set in McPherson’s favor. The Bulldogs continued the positive momentum in set two jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. The early pressure proved to be too much for the Swedes as the Bulldogs took set two 25-18.
Bethany bounced back in sets three and four, holding McPherson less than 20 points in each set, but MC proved to be too much in the decisive fifth set winning the set and match 15-9.
