No. 17 Bulldogs overpower Moundbuilders, 48-7

Box Score McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson defense held the Southwestern College Moundbuilders to 138 yards of total offense, while the offense scored 48 straight points en route to a 48-7 victory Saturday afternoon at McPherson Stadium.

The win improves the Bulldogs to 6-1 and 5-1 in the KCAC, while Southwestern drops to 1-6 and 1-5 in conference action.

The McPherson defense dominated the line of scrimmage the entire game holding the Moundbuilders to negative 24 yards rushing in the second half. For the game, the Bulldog defense held Southwestern to 138 yards of total offense on 65 plays, including five Moundbuilder turnovers.

Junior defensive end Scott Jones led the McPherson defense applying constant pressure on the Southwestern offense. Jones finished with seven tackles, including four solo tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and a pass breakup. Paulson completed the game with nine tackles, including six solo tackles and three tackles for loss.

Offensively McPherson posted 365 yards of total offense, including 141 rushing and 224 yards passing.

Junior quarterback Shane Mascarenas led the McPherson aerial attack. Mascarenas completed 18 of 37 attempts for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Mascarenas extends his touchdown passes thrown streak to eight games dating back to last season. On the year, the 6-0, 190-pound quarterback has thrown for 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Junior running back Aaron Lafitte, who struggled last week against Kansas Wesleyan, tied his season high with four touchdowns on 22 carries for 96 yards.

After neither side could generate a first down to begin the game, Stephen Harrison fumbled the football on a punt return to give the Moundbuilders the ball back on the McPherson 12 yard line.

It took the Builders just one play to punch it into the end zone, taking a 7-0 lead with 12:46 remaining in the first quarter.

The McPherson offense would come to life two drives later, marching 69 yards on seven plays, but a missed extra point would only bring the Bulldogs within one, 6-7.

McPherson would strike again early in the second quarter as Ginikachi Ibe recovered a fumbled punt return at the Southwestern one yard line. Running back Aaron Lafitte ran right up the back of his offensive line to give McPherson a 12-7 advantage. The Bulldogs would fail on the two-point conversion attempt leaving the score at 12-7.

The Bulldog defense would come through again as Thomas Stauts intercepted a Jordan Barrett pass setting the Bulldogs into Southwestern territory. McPherson would travel 46 yards on five plays, including a 22-yard touchdown run by Aaron Lafitte. This time McPherson converted the two-point conversion giving MC a 20-7 halftime lead.

McPherson continued their dominant play in the second half, scoring 14 points in both the third and fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs the 48-7 win.

McPherson hits the road next week, traveling to Hillsboro, Kan., to take on KCAC foe Tabor College. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
