Women’s soccer blast the University of Saint Mary, 3-0

Box Score McPherson, Kan. – Two first half goals by juniors Amanda Aragon and Haley Cook lifted MC past the University of Saint Mary 3-0 Saturday night at McPherson Stadium.

“I’m pleased with how well the team played on both sides of the ball this evening,” said McPherson head coach Robert Talley. “We created some quality goal scoring opportunities.”

The win improves McPherson’s record to 7-4-3 and 4-1-2 in the KCAC, while the University of Saint Mary drops to 6-7-2 and 3-3-1 in conference play. The shutout is MC’s fourth straight and extends the Bulldogs unbeaten streak to six.

McPherson controlled the offense possession for the opening kickoff, creating multiple chances in the opening minutes. MC converted their first of many chances in the 16th minute as midfielder Amanda Aragon netted a goal after the Spires unsuccessful clearance.

The goal is Aragon’s fourth of the season and first game-winning goal of 2009. Aragon ranks third on the team with eight points.

The Bulldogs added the first of two insurance goals in the 36th minute as Haley Cook received a through ball from Richelle Mascaro just outside the penalty area. After a couple of dribbles, Cook blasted the ball past the keeper, giving McPherson a 2-0 lead at the 36:13 mark.

Cook and Mascaro would hook up again in the 54th minute to give the Bulldogs their third goal of the match.

Cook leads MC with five goals and 12 points on the season.

McPherson held a 25-3 advantage in shots, including a commanding 13-0 lead at the end of the first half. The Bulldogs ended the match with seven shots on goal, while USM finished with one. MC also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Andrea Swanson earned her fifth shutout of the season to improve her record to 7-2-3. Swanson was forced to make one save in 90 minutes of work.

Haley Cook led the McPherson offense with nine shots, including three on goal. Amanda Aragon finished the contest with three shots.

McPherson returns to action Wednesday night to take on Sterling College. The match is set to kickoff at 5:30 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
