Bulldogs down Moundbuilders to advance to KCAC Semifinals

Box Score McPherson, Kan. – The third-seeded McPherson College women’s soccer team edged the sixth-seeded Southwestern College Moundbuilders 1-0 Friday night at McPherson Stadium. The win advances the Bulldogs to the KCAC semifinal round for the third straight season.

With the win, McPherson improves to 10-4-3, while the Moundbuilders end their season with a 7-10-1 mark.

McPherson scored the lone goal of the match off a penalty kick by junior forward Haley Cook in the 12th minute. With the ball bouncing around inside the penalty area, Builder defender Kerry Sonneburg received a yellow card on a handball to set up the McPherson penalty kick. Cook stepped up to the spot and buried a shot past the frozen goalkeeper for what turned out to be the match’s game winning goal.

McPherson dominated offensive possession, outshooting the Moundbuilders 17-1, including eight shots on frame. Haley Cook led the McPherson offense with five shots, including three on frame. Senior Whitney Williams and freshman Breana Jones finished the contest with three shots, respectively.

Junior goalkeeper Andrea Swanson was credited with her eight shutout of the season. Swanson recorded no saves in 90 minutes.

McPherson will now have three days rest before returning to action against the second-seeded Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes in the 2009 KCAC Women’s Soccer Tournament Tuesday at Salina Stadium. Kickoff for the match is to be determined.
