Women’s basketball drops season opener to Oklahoma Wesleyan 74-51

Box Score McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College Bulldogs women’s basketball team struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the second half, dropping their season opener, 51-74, against Oklahoma Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon at the McPherson College Sport Center.

The loss drops McPherson to 0-1 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 2-1.

McPherson raced out of the gate to an 11-4 advantage with 14:50 left in the first half, capped by a Kristen Ozbun three pointer. However, the Bulldogs could not hold down the Eagles offensive attack for long as OKWU tied the game at 11 just a few minutes later.

After allowing the Oklahoma Wesleyan to tie the game, the Bulldogs got hot, connecting on four of their next seven shots to bring the lead back to 10, 21-11.

Oklahoma Wesleyan charged back, holding the McPherson offense scoreless over the next five minutes to bring the score even at 21. The two sides would trade baskets to end the half, with OKWU holding a slight advantage 30-29.

Junior Kristen Ozbun led McPherson with 10 points, four rebounds and one assist at the half.

The Eagles stepped up their defense in the second half, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for more than four minutes twice during the period, growing their lead to 20 with 2:04 left in the game. The deficit proved to be too much for the Bulldogs, dropping the season opener 51-74.

McPherson shot only 29.7 percent from the field on 19-of-64 shooting. Junior guard Kristen Ozbun led the team with 15 points, while sophomore Brooke Weisenburger finished the contest with 11 points, respectively.

Next up, the Bulldogs take on Southwestern Christian University Monday, Nov. 9, at the McPherson Sport Center. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
