Box Score McPherson, Kan. – Five different Coyotes scored in double digits en route to an 86-29 win over the McPherson College women’s basketball team Thursday night at the McPherson Sport Center.
With the loss, McPherson drops to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in KCAC play, while the Coyotes improve to a KCAC leading 6-2 overall and 1-0 mark in conference action.
Sophomore guard Brooke Weisenburger led the Bulldogs with eight points, while junior Kristen Ozbun added seven.
McPherson battled hard, but struggled to find their offensive rhythm shooting a season-low 21.4 percent from the field, including 15.0 percent from beyond the three-point arc.
Kansas Wesleyan jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but six straight points from freshman Shireana Robinson pull McPherson within one, 6-7, at the 16:46 mark of the first half.
After each side traded baskets to bring to the score to 8-10 in favor of the Coyotes, the Kansas Wesleyan offense got hot. KWU proceeded to go on a 26-0 run, keyed by eight points by Shelby Babcock, to take a 36-8 lead with 4:36 left in the first half. Weisenburger ended the run with layup to bring the Bulldogs back within 26.
However, two Babcock free throws with under one minute remaining extended the Coyote’s halftime lead to 30, 43-13.
Rebounding was costly for MC in the first half, as the Bulldogs pulled down only 12 boards to Kansas Wesleyan’s 33, leading to 17 KWU second chance points.
McPherson opened the second half by connecting of their first four shots, as Ozbun drained a three-pointer, layup and a jumper and Weisenburger added a three of her own, to cut the gap to 48-23. KWU answered with a 15-2 run to push the lead back to 67-25 with 10:33 remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs were held without a field goal for the remaining 5:52 as Kansas Wesleyan pushed their lead out to a game high 57 points, 86-29 before the final buzzer sounded.
McPherson returns to action Saturday, Dec. 5, against the Ottawa University Braves. The Braves enter the contest with a 1-10 record (0-1 KCAC). Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m. inside the McPherson Sport Center.
