Box Score Sioux City, IA – Briar Cliff University’s senior forward Ashley Wehle netted a goal in the 102nd minute to give the McPherson women’s soccer team their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon in Sioux City, IA.
“We’re still struggling with our finishing in the final third,” said McPherson head coach Robert Talley. “We need more goal productivity if we want to compete with the upper teams in our conference.”
Briar Cliff came out firing early and found the back of the net in the 16th minute. The Chargers would not hold the Bulldog down for long, as Haley Cook hammered home a Courtney Castelli corner kick into the back of the net to bring the game even at one.
Briar Cliff would find the net for a second time in the 51st minute, but a Breana Jones goal in the 70th minute brought the game back to even.
The two sides battled hard in the overtime periods, but Briar Cliff came out on top scoring the game winning goal in the 102nd minute.
Briar Cliff held a slight edge in shots, 20-18.
Freshman goalkeeper Molly Whitwell made her first start in goal, recording nine saves in the loss.
The loss puts the Bulldogs record at 1-1-1.
McPherson returns home to McPherson Stadium to take on Mid-America Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
