Box Score McPherson, Kan. – It took the Bulldogs two overtime periods to defeat Central Christian College 1-0 in the 3rd annual S.O.C.R. benefit game Wednesday evening at McPherson Stadium.
“We knew Central Christian would give us a challenge and exploit our weaknesses,” said McPherson head coach Robert Talley. “That’s just what they did tonight.”
“We feel we controlled the tempo of the game, but we still struggled with our finishing in the final third. This was a good win for out girls to get their confidence up before the start of the conference season. We’ll build off the positives and start preparing for our game against Manhattan Christian.”
McPherson controlled possession and tempo for the entire game, but struggled putting the ball into the back of the net against the Central Christian defense. The Tigers came out packing as many as eight defenders into the McPherson scoring third, limiting MC’s scoring until the 108th minute.
The game winning goal came when Alexys Hendrickson sent a cross into the six yard box to Breana Jones. Jones volleyed the ball with her right foot and just off the diving goalkeeper’s fingers into the back of the net.
The win improves the Bulldogs record to 2-3-1.
McPherson returns to action Saturday, Sept. 26, when they travel to Manhattan Christian College. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. in Manhattan, Kan.
