Box Score Seward, Neb. -- Senior Juan Torres netted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to give McPherson College a 3-0 win over Concordia University on Saturday evening at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb.

“This was a nice way to open the season,” said McPherson College head coach Doug Quint after the game. “We had moments of brilliance during the game.”

“I thought we created some very dangerous attacking sequences which we needed to finish off. Defensively we were able to keep them at bay. It was a nice shutout victory.”

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 1-0 on the season, while Concordia drops to 2-3.

McPherson grabbed the lead in the 25th minute on a brilliant one-touch goal off the foot of junior Brent Mulford. Senior Armando Rodriguez played a cross in, which found Mulford for the goal. Mulford’s goal gave McPherson an early 1-0 in the match.

The Bulldogs scored again in the second half when junior Calin Strong redirected a free kick from senior Alex Toro into the back of the net. McPherson would add another just two minutes later when Armando Rodriguez was fouled in the box. Senior Juan Torres stepped up for the penalty kick, beating the keeper to give McPherson the 3-0 lead.

Each side had opportunities in the game with McPherson winning the shot category 15-12. The Bulldogs had 12 shots on goal, compared to the Concordia 8.

Sophomore goalkeeper Blake Jett made eight saves in the shutout victory.

McPherson is back in action on Friday, September 11, at University of Sioux Falls. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
