Friends University defense keys 68-51 win over the Bulldogs women’s basketball team

Box Score Wichita, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons converted 26 McPherson turnovers into 28 points to propel themselves past the Bulldogs women’s basketball team, 68-51, Thursday night at the Garvey Center.

Senior forward Carley Sharp came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs (1-6, 4-11) with 12 points in just her second game back from injury. Junior guard Kristen Ozbun was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 10 points to go along with a team high seven rebounds.

Jessica Halsig tallied 17 points and five rebounds for the Falcons (2-4, 6-10), while Ta’Vionna Polley-Davis scored 12.

The Falcons opened the game on a 10-4 run, but two straight field goals from Jamie Teeters and Michelle Ducy brought the score back within two, 10-8, with 12:52 remaining in the opening period.

However, the Falcons held McPherson without a field goal over the next four minutes to extend their lead to double digits, 23-13 at the 7:26 mark in the first half. The two sides traded baskets the remainder of the half as Friends entered the locker room with a 31-21 advantage.

Nearly four minutes passed before the first points of the second half were scored, as Jacee Coberly connected on two free throws to break the drought.

Friends extended their lead out to 25 points with 5:56 remaining as McPherson began to struggle from the field. McPherson chipped away at the lead, but the Falcons proved to be too much down the stretch.

The Bulldogs ended the night 18-of-60 (30.0 percent) from the field. McPherson forced the Falcons into 23 turnovers, but struggled holding on to the ball committing 26 of their own.

McPherson continues KCAC action Saturday night at 5:00 p.m. against the Sterling College Warriors.
