Bulldogs edge Warriors, 89-85

Box Score McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s basketball team edged the visiting Warriors of Sterling College, 89-85, Saturday night at the McPherson College Sport Center. Senior guard Marlon Dominique led the Bulldog offense with 14 points.

With the win, McPherson improves to 14-3 and 7-1 in KCAC play, while the Warriors drop to 5-13 and 2-6 in the league.

The Bulldogs found themselves with a one point lead, 86-85, after Sterling guard Zach Goodrich connected on a deep three. On McPherson’s next possession, senior forward Antowine Lamb took two dribbles and rattled in a hook shot to give McPherson an 88-85 lead with 37 seconds remaining.

Lamb again made his presence know on the next possession, pulling down a rebound off a Sterling three-point attempt to seal the victory for the Bulldogs.

Senior guard Marlon Dominique led five different players who scored in the double digits for MC. Dominique had a team-best 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He dished out two assists, recorded one block and one steal.

Senior guard Charles Moore had 13 points and six boards, while Mike Reece finished the night with 12, Trent Severs 11 and Antowine Lamb 10. Severs led the team with six assists.

McPherson had a strong bench presence, as the Bulldog subs outscored the Warriors 37-11. MC managed to outrebound Sterling, 40-32, thanks in part to four different Bulldogs finishing with at least four boards.

Sterling opened the contest with an 8-2 run, but McPherson clawed their way back to tie the game at 14-14 on an Aaron Frazier three-point basket. McPherson connected on 16-of-28 attempts in the first half, while holding the Warriors to 10-of-27 to extend the lead to nine, 41-32 at the break.

The Warriors came on strong out of the break as Randy July netted 13 of the Warriors first 16 points of the half to bring the game within one, 50-49. McPherson extended their lead back to four, until a couple of quick baskets by Sterling knotted the game at 59 apiece with 13:03 remaining.

The two sides traded runs into the final minutes of the half with the lead changing three times. However, McPherson took a 77-75 lead with 4:44 remaining on a Mike Reece layup off a pass from Trent Severs.

The Warriors would tie the game with 2:25 remaining, but the McPherson proved to be too much down the stretch, as the Bulldogs edged Sterling, 89-85.

McPherson finished the game shooting 55.0 percent (33-of-60) from the field, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the three-point arch.

Defensively, the Bulldogs held the Warriors to 44.8 percent shooting from the field. Randy July scored a game-high 38 points in the effort.

MC returns to action Thursday, Jan. 21, against Bethel College. Tipoff for that game is set for 8:00 p.m. inside the McPherson Sport Center.
