Leavenworth, Kan. – Senior forward Brent Mulford (Topeka, Kan.) scored twice as the Bulldogs snapped a three-match losing streak with a 4-0 win against the University of Saint Mary Saturday afternoon at the USM Football/Soccer Complex in Leavenworth, Kan.

“This team had a great week of preparation and executed well,” said McPherson head coach Doug Quint. “It’s as good of a performance as we have had all year. Our midfielders had a lot of possession, which in turn created numerous quality chances to score. We were dominate today.”

With the win, McPherson improves to 4-3-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in KCAC play, while the Spires drop to 1-7-1 and 0-1-0 in conference action.

In the first half, McPherson failed to convert until the 35th minute when Brent Mulford netted his fourth goal of the season to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 into the half. Mulford would strike again with his second goal of the match in the 63rd off a throw in from Jared Kientz (Derby, Kan.), making the score 2-0 in the favor of McPherson.

Just one minute later, Geverton Ost (Porto Algre, Brazil) put the match out of USM’s reach with his first career goal on a penalty kick. The PK was set up by a handball by a Spire in the penalty area. Insult to injury was added in the 89th minute as the Bulldog lead was extended to 4-0 on a USM own goal.

Overall, McPherson outshot the Spires, 38-11 and held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bulldogs return to action this Wednesday against Tabor College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
