Leavenworth, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s soccer team could not overcome an early deficit as the Bulldogs fell to the University of Saint Mary 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the USM Football/Soccer Complex.
With the loss, McPherson falls to 3-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play, while the Spires improve to 2-6-1 and 1-0-0 in KCAC action.
The Spires opened the match with three unanswered goals in the 16th, 44th and 61st minutes to take a 3-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the 64th minute when senior forward Haley Cook (Littleton, Colo.) notched her second goal of the season to cut the deficit to 3-1. Ana Calderon (Lone Tree, Colo.) would bring McPherson step closer with a 87th minute goal, but the Spires proved too much in the end.
Sophomore Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) played all 90 minutes in goal, recording five saves.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday evening at Tabor College. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. in Hillsboro, Kan.
