Hillsboro, Kan. – Forwards Brent Mulford (Topeka, Kan.) and Andrew Suits (Henderson, Nev.) teamed up for a pair of second half goals to propel the McPherson College men’s soccer program to a 3-2 come from behind victory over Tabor College Wednesday night at Weins Stadium.
With the win, McPherson improves to 5-4-1 on the year, 2-0-0 in KCAC play, while the Blue Jays drop to 2-8-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.
The Bulldogs found themselves scrambling early in the first half as the Blue Jays came out and scored two goals in the first 20 minutes.
McPherson cut the deficit to one, 2-1, late in the first half when Mulford netted his first of two goals on the day as Geverton Ost (Porto Algre, Brazil) struck a ball from 30 yards out that, after a deflection, landed at Mulford’s feet. He then turned and struck the ball near post and past the diving Tabor goalkeeper. Ost was credited with an assist on the play.
Mulford would strike again in the 49th minute when he dribbled approximately 25 yards before beating the goalkeeper in a one-on-one. Jared Kientz (Derby, Kan.) set up the score on a long ball through the Tabor defense. The goal tied the match at 2-2 with 40 minutes left.
The Bulldogs would add the game winner just six minutes later as Andrew Suits received a flick-on from Mulford off a punt by goalkeeper Blake Jett (Fort Worth, Texas). Suits took the ball past a pair of Blue Jay defenders before placing the ball around the outstretched keeper.
Overall, McPherson outshot Tabor 20-15 in the contest and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. In goal, Jett recorded four saves in the effort.
McPherson returns to the pitch Saturday evening when it hosts Ottawa University. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
