Hillsboro, Kan. – Senior defender Richelle Mascaro (Tujunga, Calif.) netted her first goal of the season to propel the McPherson College women’s soccer program to its first KCAC win of the season Wednesday night at Tabor College, 1-0.
"We're very pleased with the performance of our team," said McPherson head coach Robert Talley. "They did a great job controlling the ball both offensively and defensively. The midfield did a nice job communicating with the defense and forwards. We needed a solid performance like this to get us ready for the weekend's match against Ottawa University."
The win improves McPherson to 4-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play and snaps a four match winless streak. Tabor fell to 0-9-2 overall and 0-1-1 in KCAC play.
Mascaro scored the game winning goal in the 10th minute when Ana Calderon (Lone Tree, Colo.) played a corner kick just inside the six-yard box. The ball took one bounce before Mascaro touched it between a pair of Blue Jay defenders and past the goalkeeper.
McPherson would continue its offensive pressure the remainder of the game, but failed to score a second goal. The Bulldogs outshot Tabor 24-9, including six shots on frame, and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Bulldog goalkeeper Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) notched her third shutout of the season. She registered three saves in 90 minutes.
The Bulldogs look to continue the momentum into its Saturday matchup against Ottawa University. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
