Bulldogs block their way past Tabor, 3-1

McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s volleyball team collected a season best 19 team blocks, including nine blocks from junior Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.) en route to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-9, 20-25, 25-21) victory against Tabor College Monday evening at the McPherson Sport Center. The win marks the first time the Bulldogs have defeated Tabor since 1995.

"This was a very big win for us," said McPherson coach Susan Barton. "We executed our game plan perfectly. We have been working on doing the little things and the girls did a great job of doing just that. I am very proud of the team."

With the win, McPherson improves to 19-12 overall and 10-7 in the KCAC, while the Blue Jays drop to 14-14 overall and 11-6 in league play.

Along with the blocks, Hiebert led the MC attack with 10 kills and a .161 hitting percentage. Natalie Boss (Waterville, Kan.) delivered nine kills as she hit .217 for the match, while Amy Neufeld (Hillsboro, Kan.) chipped in six kills and eight blocks.

In the opening set, neither team could gain control as the score was tied three times and changed hands four times. Tied at 12-12, the Bulldogs used an 8-3 surge to create a 20-15 lead. McPherson conceded only two points the rest of the frame to take set one, 20-17.

McPherson came out red hot in the second set, opening things up with a 15-5 rally. The Bulldogs kept their foot on the gas the whole set to win 25-9.

The Blue Jays battled back in the third frame to cut the MC lead to 2-1 after a 25-20 win.

However, the Bulldogs recovered in the fourth, jumping out to a 10-5 lead to open the frame. McPherson would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way, as MC registered a 25-21 win to take the set and match 3-1.

Junior Brelynn Schloo (Salina, Kan.) played a solid match with a team-best 20 assists and seven digs, while senior Kelley Green (Brighton, Colo.) had a double-double with 11 assists and 14 digs.

McPherson returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 3, for their season finale at Bethany College. First serve between the Bulldogs and Swedes is set for 7:00 p.m. in Lindsborg, Kan.
