McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College football team had 21 players, including two conference player of the year award recipients, named to the All-KCAC Football Team announced Tuesday (Nov. 16) by the conference office. It is the second season in a row McPherson has had at least one player of the year and 19 or more honorees.
Seniors Shane Mascarenas (Peoria, Ariz) and Scott Jones (Melvern, Kan.), along with head coach Joe Bettasso headlined the group consisting of 10 first team members, five second teamers and six honorable mention award winners. Mascarenas was named the KCAC Player of the Year for his performance as MC’s starting quarterback, while Jones earned KCAC Defensive Player of the Year for his play at defensive end.
Head coach Joe Bettasso was named the KCAC Coach of the Year in his first season at the helm of the Bulldog football program. He guided MC to a No. 6 ranking in the NAIA Football Coaches Top 25 Poll, a 9-0 (10-0 overall) conference record and the teams second berth into the NAIA Football Championship Series.
Mascarenas, who was also a unanimous first team selection, leads the league with a .633 completion percentage (210-of-332), 3,419 yards and 35 touchdowns, all three of which are McPherson College single season records. He is the currently leading the NAIA in passing yards per game with a 341.9 average and has thrown for at least 320 yards in seven of the Bulldog’s 10 games.
On the opposite side of the ball, Jones has been a disruptive force for opposing offenses that is constantly battling through double teams. Along with being named defensive player of the year, Jones was a unanimous returning selection to the All-KCAC first team. He leads the team with two forced fumbles, while recording 32 tackles (21 solo), including five tackles for loss and two sacks on the season.
Senior running back Aaron Lafitte (Ironwood, Ariz.), senior defensive back Shelton Thigpen (Wylie, Texas), senior place kicker/punter Travis Eason (Tulsa, Okla.) and sophomore offensive lineman David Kraft (Peck, Kan.) all repeat as KCAC first team members, while junior wide receiver Andy Skinner (Montezuma, Kan.), junior offensive lineman Joe Becker (Plainville, Kan.), and seniors Will Powers (Garden City, Kan.) and Ginikachi Ibe (San Jose, Calif.) make their first appearance.
One of the primary targets for Mascarenas, Skinner ended 2010 as the McPherson College all-time leader in receiving yards (2,218) and receiving touchdowns (27), while also setting the single season mark with a team-best 1,183 receiving yards.
Lafitte paced the Bulldog ground attack with 974 yards on 169 carries, including a KCAC best 18 rushing touchdowns. He finished the regular season just one touchdown behind former Bulldog Eddie Ball (1950-53) for first on the MC all-time touchdowns list.
Thigpen finished fourth on the team and led the Bulldog secondary with 47 tackles, including 33 solo stops and 4.5 tackles for loss, while Ibe registered 41 tackles and a team-best six interceptions. Powers was second on the team with 62 tackles and three interceptions.
Eason ended the regular season ranked third on the Bulldogs with 88 points. He converted a single season school record 8-of-15 field goals and 64-of-67 PATs. He earned first team honors for both the place kicker and punter position. His net punting average was 43.7.
Second team award winners for the Bulldogs include senior Austin Brown (Lawton, Okla.), senior Rafail Reyes (Coolidge, Ariz.), junior Joe Middleton, junior J.L. Gomez (Prosper, Texas) and junior Thomas Stauts (Little Elm, Texas) as a punt returner.
Brown, Gomez and Reyes have both been key members of the Bulldog defense in 2010. Gomez leads the unit with 82 tackles and 16.5 tackles for loss, while Reyes paces the defensive line with 41 tackles. Brown owns a team best seven pass breakups.
Middleton leads all McPherson receivers with 67 receptions and 15 touchdowns. His 1,140 receiving yards on the season ranks second only to Skinner.
Tight end John Davidson (Tulsa, Okla.), offensive lineman Chris Lange (Midwest City, Okla.), offensive lineman Dusty Hague (Cheney, Kan.), defensive lineman John Sobczuk (Scottsdale, Ariz.), defensive lineman Drew Thomsen (Phoenix, Ariz.) and linebacker Darrick Johnson (Maricopa, Ariz.) were the McPherson players who earned honorable mention honors. Stauts also earned honorable mention status as a defensive back.
The Bulldogs return to action this Saturday when they host McKendree University (Ill.) in the first round of the 2010 NAIA Football Championship Series. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CST) from McPherson Stadium.
