Lawrence, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s basketball team overcame an 11 point first half deficit to give head coach Cy Rolfs his first career victory, 70-64, Tuesday evening against Haskell Indian Nations University.

With the win, McPherson improves to 1-1 on the season, while the Indians drop to 0-1.

Senior guard Kristen Ozbun (Rose Hill, Kan.) led the Bulldogs with 24 points on 10-of-16 field goals, while Elice Frey (Riley, Kan.) led the team with 11 rebounds to go along with 15 points for her first career double-double. Freshman Madison Chambers (Wellsville, Kan.) added a spark of the bench with nine points and eight rebounds in the effort.

The Bulldogs struggled out of the gate as the Fighting Indians built a lead to as many as 11 points, 25-14 with 5:14 remaining in the first half. However, McPherson regrouped and embarked on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 25-24, with just under two minutes left in the period.

A Haskell layup pushed the margin back to three, but an Ozbun three pointer and traditional three-point play from Breahna Gillespie (Little River, Kan.) gave MC a 32-29 halftime advantage.

McPherson used that same momentum in the second half as Frey and Ozbun teamed up to score the Bulldogs first five baskets of the frame. MC extended its lead to as many as 11 after three consecutive three-pointers by Brooke Sloan (Buffalo, Kan.).

Haskell tried to battle back, cutting the margin to 53-48 with 9:45 remaining. However, McPherson held strong and eventually stretched its the lead back eight with a minute left.

McPherson will continue action Friday when they play host to Johnson & Wales University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. inside the McPherson College Sport Center.
