McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s basketball team dropped a hard fought 65-57 loss to Johnson & Wales University Friday evening at the McPherson Sport Center.
The loss drops MC to 1-2 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 1-2.
In the first half, both team played tremendous defense, however McPherson who entered locker room with an 18-17 advantage. The Bulldog defense held JWU to just four field goals in the first half.
After falling behind six earlier in the period a 7-1 run that included a pair of field goal from Kristen Ozbun (Rose Hill, Kan.) knotted the game at 12 apiece with five minutes remaining. The two sides traded baskets to end the half.
The second half proved to be just at tight as the first half. Junior guard Brooke Weisenburger (Gardner, Kan.) scored seven of MC’s first 10 points of the half as the Bulldogs jumped out to a six-point, 29-23 lead. However, similarly to McPherson in the first half, the Wildcats battled back to tie the score 33-33 with a little more than 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
McPherson again would push the lead out to six, but JWU would not go away and again tied the score 50-50 with 1:20 left. The Bulldogs had a pair of chances late in the period, but could not net the game winning basket, as the game would have to be decided in overtime.
Despite a solid team effort from the Bulldogs, MC went cold in the overtime period. The Bulldogs only mustered one field goal and one free throw as JWU score 11 points in the extra period to earn the win.
Weisenburger led the MC offense with 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. She also pulled down a team best eight rebounds and five assists in the effort. Ozbun was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 17.
On the night, McPherson shot 19-of-73 (26.0 percent) from the floor and 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) from the free throw line. McPherson forced 26 Wildcat turnovers, but JWU held a 54-47 advantage in rebounding.
McPherson returns to action Saturday when they travel to Mid-America Christian University. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
