Sterling, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s soccer team battled for 110 minutes, but fell 5-4 in a shootout in the quarterfinals of the KCAC tournament against Sterling College.
The loss eliminates the Bulldogs from the tournament and drops their record to 7-8-3 on the season, while the Warriors advance to play No.1 seed Ottawa University and improve to 10-7-2.
Sterling opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Anely Laguna netted a pass from Morgan Martin to give the Warriors the early 1-0 advantage. However, the Bulldogs answered less than 10 minutes later when senior forward Haley Cook (Littleton, Colo.) notched her fifth goal on the season to even the score at 1-1.
Following 45 minutes of play the two sides remained deadlocked with seven shots apiece and a goal each.
Despite the early scoring, neither side could score the game winner. Following the second overtime period, the match was forced to go into a shootout. In the end, Sterling took advantage on the penalty kick situation by netting five to McPherson’s four.
Cook ended the match with a team-leading five shots, including two shots on frame. Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) tallied seven saves in 110 minutes in the effort.
