McPherson, Kan. – Senior quarterback Shane Mascarenas (Peoria, Ariz) set a pair of career passing records, while junior wide receiver Andy Skinner (Montezuma, Kan.) broke the single season receiving yards mark as the No. 6 Bulldogs (9-0, 8-0) shutout the winless Bethel College Threshers (0-9, 0-8), 47-0 at McPherson Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The victory gives McPherson its first KCAC Championship since 1952, as the Bulldogs hold the tiebreaker over second place Ottawa University.

Mascarenas entered the game needing just seven yards to pass former Bulldog quarterback Greg Mendez for first place on the all-time career passing yards list. The Phoenix, Ariz. native wasted no time as he hooked up with Josh White (Stockton, Mo.) for a 62-yard touchdown strike on MC’s second play of the game. He would find White again in the third quarter to surpass Mendez’s career passing touchdowns record of 63.

Mascarenas finished the afternoon with 439 yards and five touchdowns on 20-of-28 attempts. The performance gives Mascarenas 6,541 career passing yards and 68 career touchdowns. It marked the sixth time this season that he has passed for at least four touchdowns.

Skinner, who previously set the all-time record for receiving yards and touchdowns, caught four passes for 97 yards to move past Matt Holtry for MC’s single season receiving yards record. Skinner has registered 1,138 yards on the season.

For the game, McPherson tallied 631 yards of total offense, including 445 yards from the passing attack. Junior wide receiver Joe Middleton (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the team with 127 yards on five catches, including a 73-yard touchdown late in the first quarter. Running back Chris German (Lewisville, Texas) made his first start of the season and led MC in rushing with 85 yards on 14 carries, including two touchdowns.

Defensively, the Bulldogs held its second straight opponent under 260 yards of total offense. The Threshers gained just 247 total yards on 70 plays. Junior linebacker J.L. Gomez (Prosper, Texas) led the team with eight tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss, while seniors Scott Jones (Melvern, Kan.) and Drew Griffin (Rancho Cordova, Calif.) recorded six apiece.

Following a BC three and out to start the game, it took McPherson just two plays to open the scoring when Josh White took a swing pass 60 yards to pay dirt to give MC the 7-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs continued their dominance on their second possession with a five play, 47-yard drive capped by a German three-yard touchdown run. MC would miss the PAT.

A pair of big plays, including a 73-yard pitch and catch from Mascarenas to Middleton and a 38-yard reception by Skinner would propel the Bulldogs to a 26-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

White’s second touchdown of the game late in the second quarter gave MC a 33-0 halftime advantage.

The deficit proved to be too much for Bethel, as the Bulldogs tacked on a pair of second half scores to earn the 47-0 shutout win.

McPherson returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 13, when the Bulldogs travel to Bethany College for its KCAC regular season finale. Kickoff with the Swedes is set for 1:30 p.m.
