McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s soccer team avenged a 1-0 regular season loss at Bethany College with a 3-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the KCAC tournament. The No. 5 seeded Bulldogs (9-8-1) move on to the semifinals to face No. 1 Kansas Wesleyan University.

On a cold night at the Anderson Athletic Complex, McPherson scored all three goals in the first half en route to the 3-1 win.

McPherson opened the scoring in the eighth minute when senior midfielder Trent Lawrence (Hutchinson, Kan.) volleyed a corner kick from freshman Tyler Strampel (Castle Rock, Colo.) into the back of the net from five yards away. It is Lawrence’s first goal of the season.

Four minutes later, sophomore Geverton Ost (Porto Algre, Brazil) received a pass in the center of the field and after a pair of touches ripped a shot from approximately 40 yards out over the keeper’s hands to give McPherson the 2-0 advantage.

Bethany would get on the board in the 21st minute on a Wesley Laney goal, but the Bulldogs would answer the call ten minutes later on Tarek Khalidi's (Augusta, Kan.) first goal of the season. The goal was set up by a Lance Dick (Hutchinson, Kan.) free kick that ricocheted off the cross bar to the feet of Khalidi who slotted the ball past the BC goalkeeper.

McPherson ended the night with a slight, 21-20 edge in shots, including 13 shots on goal. Despite missing some key members, the Bulldogs controlled possession the entire match.

McPherson’s semifinal match against Kansas Wesleyan University will take place Wednesday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at Salina Stadium.
