The Matchup

The McPherson College women’s basketball team kicks off the 2011 portion of its schedule with a road trip to York College (Neb.) on Monday, January 3. Tipoff from the Freeman Center in York, Neb. is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (CST). Radio coverage of the matchup between the Bulldogs and Panthers will be provided by 96.7 FM KBBE Mid Kansas Radio. The Bulldogs (3-10, 1-3) are coming off a 54-72 loss on the road at Friends University. MC struggled offensive shooting only 27.3 percent (18-of-66) from the field, while the Falcons connected on 41.0 percent (25-of-61) attempts. Despite the loss, freshman forward Tori Verdieck (New Castle, Colo.) set a season high with 14 points, while pulling down a team leading nine rebounds. Along with Verdieck, junior guard Sierra Gillespie (Chase, Kan.) came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points.

On the season, McPherson has been lead by 1,000-point scorer Kristen Ozbun (Rose Hill, Kan.). Ozbun ranks 29th nationally averaging 17.5 points per game on 37.7 percent (77-of-204) shooting from the field, including 36.8 percent (25-of-68) from beyond the arc. On the season, Ozbun has been held under double-digit scoring just twice, and back on Dec. 9 against Bethel College set a program record with 38 points.

McPherson will return to KCAC conference action on Thursday, January 6, as the Bulldogs host Southwestern College at the McPherson Sport Center. The matchup is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.

Scouting York
York College enters 2011 with a 3-10 record following an 82-70 loss at Midland Lutheran College on Dec. 8. Against MLC, the Panthers had three individuals score double figures, including 13 points from Lorena Medeiros and Keishell Paul. Medeiros chipped in five assists and five rebounds along with her points. Prior to Monday night’s matchup with McPherson, York has a New Year’s Eve matchup with Dakota State University at 2:00 p.m.

York’s three victories on the season came against Tabor College (63-61), Graceland University (68-67) and the University of Saint Mary (55-52). The Panthers win against USM on Nov. 23.

Paul paces the York offensive attack averaging 11.2 points per game on 37.1 percent (52-of-140) shooting. The 5-7 senior guard ranks second on the squad in three-point field goal percentage (37.0) and fourth in rebounds per game (4.9). Fellow guard Lorena Medeiros is the only other Panther averaging double figures at 10.3 points per game.

York is coached by Jen Speckelmier.

In their last meeting...
The McPherson College Lady Bulldogs defeated York College on the road Monday night, 60-55. The win is the second on the season for the Bulldogs, improving their overall record to 2-7.

Tough defense and double digit scoring from junior Carley Sharp (13), sophomore Kristen Ozbun (10), and freshman Brooke Sloan (12) propelled McPherson to the win against York. The McPherson defense held York to 27% shooting on the game. The Lady Bulldogs also outrebounded the Panthers 43 to 33, led by Angelina Fiorenzi with nine.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead off a couple of McPherson turnovers. The Lady Bulldogs would battle back pulling within one point four times before tying the game at 20-20 with seven minutes left in the first half.

York held off McPherson until 45 seconds were left in the half, when a layup by Carley Sharp gave the Lady Bulldogs their first lead, 30-27.

A Panther three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half tied the game, 30-30, going into halftime.

In the second half the Lady Bulldogs came out of the locker room playing fast paced and aggressive basketball, going on a 5-0 run to open the half.

After York answered with a 3-0 run of their own to pull within two, 35-33, the Lady Bulldogs answered with another run of their own, stretching the lead to ten points with 6:36 left in the half.

York would slowly chip away at the McPherson lead, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to hold them off to win by five, 60-55.

The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action Thursday night as they travel to sixth ranked Sterling College.
