Winfield, Kan. – The McPherson College softball team (6-16-1, 1-11 KCAC) committed five errors en route to a 4-1 loss in game two of its Saturday afternoon doubleheader against Southwestern College (12-17, 7-5 KCAC).

McPherson, which got a strong performance from freshman pitcher Kelsey Dutton, struggled mightily at the plate as the Bulldogs managed only three hits. Combine MC’s lack of offense combined with five team errors proved too much of a hurdle for the Bulldogs to overcome.

The Bulldogs plated their only run in the second when sophomore Andrea Falk drew a walk and junior Kelsey Gray drove a ball into left-center field to score Falk after she had swiped second base.

Southwestern answered McPherson’s run with two of their own in the bottom of the third on one hit and three MC errors. SWC added two more in the bottom of the fifth aided by the Bulldogs fifth error of the game.

In the circle, Dutton pitched 6.0 innings in the loss. The freshman right-hander threw 80 pitches, allowing four runs (one earned), walking none, and striking out three.

Offensively for McPherson, Kelsey Gray led the Bulldogs by going 1-for-3 with the team’s only RBI. Senior Kristen Ozbun and sophomore Kelley Custer recorded MC’s only other hits.

McPherson returns to action Monday, April 19, when they play host to Kansas Wesleyan University. First pitch of game one is set for 5:00 p.m. at Wall Park.
