McPherson, Kan. –
The McPherson College men’s soccer team played Concordia to a two overtime 1-1 draw in its season opener Wednesday night at McPherson Stadium. McPherson controlled the tempo offensively with 19 shots to CU’s nine, but failed to net more than the one goal.

"We had a never say die attitude tonight and kept the pressure on them," said McPherson head coach Doug Quint. "I challenged our team at halftime and it was nice to see a young squad respond. We played well in the second half and through the overtimes. This is a team that is improving everyday."

After 45 minutes to scoreless action, Concordia’s Nathan Douglas volleyed a pass from Tim Soenksen past the outstretched McPherson goalkeeper to take a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute.

McPherson worked hard, but failed to answer until senior forward Brent Mulford (Topeka, Kan.) received a flick from sophomore Sam Tucker (Thornton, Colo.). Mulford took one touch, while battling off a defender before toeing the ball past the goalkeeper and into the lower left corner of the net.

The two sides battled out the final 13 minutes of the half, but failed to score.

In the first overtime, Mulford had another tremendous opportunity, but was pulled down from behind by the CU defender. The defenseman received a red card and was sent off for the remainder of the contest.  It proved to be the last major chance for either team.

Goalkeeper Blake Jett (Fort Worth, Texas) played all 90 minutes, allowing one goal and recording no saves. Geverton Ost (Porto Algre, Brazil) led the team with three shots, two of which on goal. As a team, McPherson recorded 19 shots and seven shots on goal.

The Bulldogs continue non-conference action on Saturday, Sept. 4 against the University of Sioux Falls. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. CST.
