McPherson, Kan. –
A pair of goals in the final ten minutes of the first half proved to be too much for the McPherson College women’s soccer team as they dropped their season opener to Concordia University, 2-1, Wednesday evening at McPherson Stadium.

The Bulldogs took advantage of a slower Concordia back line, scoring in the 11th minute when Richelle Mascaro (Tujunga, Calif.) played a long ball to Amanda Aragon (Thornton, Colo.) who had sprinted past her defender and beat the goalkeeper to give MC an early 1-0 advantage.

Despite the early swing in momentum, McPherson failed to hold as CU tied the game on a 30-yard rip from Jamie Sanchez in the 36th. Sanchez would strike again eight minutes later with her second goal of the match when McPherson goalkeeper Molly Whitwell failed to corral the rebound.

Both sides turned up the defense in the second half keeping the game notched at two goals to one.

McPherson tallied nine shots, including four shots on goal. Sophomore Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) played all 90 minutes in goal, recording nine saves. Concordia held a major advantage in corner kicks, 7-2.

McPherson’s next match is against the University of Sioux Falls Saturday afternoon at McPherson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
