Wichita, Kan. – No. 12 McPherson showed its explosiveness on both sides of the ball in the 52-20 victory over No. 15 Friends University Saturday evening at Adair-Austin Stadium. The Bulldogs racked up 501 yards of total offense, while holding the Falcons to 244.
Playing in front of a packed house at Adair-Austin Stadium, the Bulldogs exploded for 42 first half points to take a 42-6 lead into the half. McPherson tacked on 10 more points in the second half to finish its dominating victory over the preseason KCAC favorite Friends University
Junior wide receiver Andy Skinner (Montezuma, Kan.) had a career day with eight catches for a McPherson football record 268 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Skinner also added a rushing touchdown in the effort to tally four on the day. The 5-10 junior from Montezuma, Kan., had more than 200 yards of his 268 by the end of the first half.
What Skinner was to the offense, senior defensive back Ginikachi Ibe (San Jose, Calif.) was to the defense. Ibe recorded three interceptions of Falcon quarterback Jaymie Bristow along with playing a key role in shutting down All-KCAC receivers Mike Hyde and Doug Pierce.
McPherson’s offensive explosion began at the 9:26 mark in the first quarter when quarterback Shane Mascarenas (Peoria, Ariz) linked up for his first of three touchdown passes to Skinner. Skinner took the pass and ran away from four Falcon defenders for a 76-yard touchdown to give McPherson the early 7-0. The drive was set up by an Ibe interception.
McPherson would strike three more times to post 28 unanswered points on a Joe Middleton (Phoenix, Ariz.) reception, an Aaron Lafitte (Ironwood, Ariz.) run and a 24-yard scamper from Skinner.
Friends would get on the board with a Bristow four-yard touchdown pass with 4:21 left in the second quarter.
However, the Bulldogs stormed right back to score another two touchdowns in the final four minutes of the first half to enter the locker room up 42-6.
McPherson added 10 third quarter points en route to the 52-20 victory.
For the day, McPherson recorded 501 yards of total offense, including 365 yards through the air. Mascarenas led the passing attack with 327 yards passing, including a long of 82 yards. Senior running back Aaron Lafitte cruised to 86 yards on 12 carries to lead the ground game.
Defensively, the Bulldogs forced four Falcon turnovers, while registering five sacks for 36 yards lost. Junior linebacker Darrick Johnson (Maricopa, Ariz.) led the team with 10 tackles, including 0.5 tackles for loss. Fellow defenders Rafail Reyes (Coolidge, Ariz.) and John Sobczuk (Scottsdale, Ariz.) added 1.5 sacks, while tallying nine and six tackles, respectively. Cameron Smith (Lebo, Kan.), Will Powers (Garden City, Kan.) and Drew Thomsen (Phoenix, Ariz.) also posted sacks in the effort.
McPherson returns home for possibly its toughest test of the season next Saturday when the Bulldogs host Ottawa University. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
