McPherson, Kan. – Five first half goals propelled McPherson (2-1-1) to its second straight victory as the Bulldogs rolled to a 5-0 shutout over Briar Cliff University on Saturday evening at McPherson Stadium in McPherson, Kan. The shutout marked the teams second of the season and second in consecutive games.

An offensive explosion by the McPherson jumped on a Briar Cliff defense that had given up 11 goals in two matches to take a 5-0 halftime lead on a hat trick from sophomore Rachael Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and two goals senior Amanda Aragon (Thornton, Colo.). Cornell’s hat trick is only the eight in program history.

Cornell’s dominance of the BCU defense came early in the match with goals in the second, 11th and 24th minutes to give MC the early 3-0 lead. Senior Haley Cook (Littleton, Colo.) was credited with an assist on Cornell’s first goal.

With just a short break in the first half goal scoring, Aragon added her two in the 41st and 44th minute to deflate the Charger defense heading into the locker room. Freshman Kourtney Mitchell (Silt, Colo.) provided the assist on Aragon’s second goal.

Sophomore Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) and freshman Tori Verdeick (New Castle, Colo.) split time goal to earn a team shutout for the Bulldogs. Both keepers played 45 minutes with Whitwell recorded three saves, while Verdeick tallied four.

McPherson outshot Briar Cliff, 19-13, including a dominating 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.

McPherson wraps up its season opening home stand with a matchup against cross-town rival Central Christian College on Wednesday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
