McPherson, Kan. – Junior Tyler Tank (Austin, Texas) notched his second goal of the season while junior goalkeeper Blake Jett (Fort Worth, Texas) led a backline that held the Tigers to only five shots as the McPherson College men’s soccer team shutout Central Christian College, 2-0, Wednesday night at McPherson Stadium. The win improves the Bulldogs to 3-1-1 on the young season.
“Central (Christian) is a much improved team and will do well this year,” said McPherson coach Doug Quint. “Cole is doing a good job with them. Tonight was a good performance defensively. I’m pleased with the improvements we have made in that area. This is our second senior class to graduate without conceding a goal to Central It’s been five years now since they have scored on us.”
Tank notched what proved to be the game winning goal in the 48th minute off a failed clearance by the Central defense. Sophomore midfielder Geverton Ost (Porto Algre, Brazil) set up the goal, sending a free kick into the penalty area from about thirty yards out. The ball then ricocheted off the Tiger goalkeeper and to the feet of the crashing Tank, who took full advantage of the opportunity, netting his second goal of the season. Ost was credited with an assist on the play.
McPherson would add its second goal of the match just two minutes later on a Central Christian own goal.
The Bulldogs dominated play offensively, outshooting the Tigers 17-5, including three shots on goal. Senior forward Brent Mulford (Topeka, Kan.) led the team with six shots, while sophomore Andrew Suits (Henderson, Nev.) added three.
Jett tallied his second shutout of the season. He recorded two saves in 90 minutes.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they travel to Claremore, Okla. to take on Rogers State University. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
