Bulldogs battle past Warriors, 3-1

McPherson, Kan. – Junior hitter Kory Hiebert and sophomore Natalie Boss accounted for 29 of the Bulldogs 46 kills as the McPherson College volleyball team defeated Sterling College, 3-1, Wednesday night at the McPherson Sport Center.

“Tonight was a good win for us,” said McPherson coach Susan Barton. “It was a total team effort. I am very proud of the way the girls responded in tough situations. They will not go down without a fight. Things are really starting to come together.”

With the win, McPherson improves to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in the KCAC, while the Warriors fall to 4-8 and 1-3 in conference action.

Junior Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.) continued to lead the Bulldogs with 16 kills and a .324 hitting percentage, while fellow hitter Natalie Boss (Waterville, Kan.) finished the night with 13 kills. Junior setter Brelynn Schloo (Salina, Kan.) tallied a double-double with 42 assists and 13 digs. Junior Brooke Wedel (Moundridge, Kan.) and freshman Karina Harvey (Walton, Kan.) ended the night with 19 and 18 digs, respectively.

Despite struggling offensively in the first set, McPherson took full advantage of Sterling miscues to take the opening frame, 25-17. Sterling battled back in set two for a 26-24 victory to even the match at a set apiece.

In the third set, McPherson hit a match-best .222, including 15 kills en route to the 25-22 win. The two sides found themselves even most the way through the fourth frame, but it was the Bulldogs who prevailed to win the set, 25-21, and the match 3-1.

McPherson returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 28 at Southwestern College. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
