Bulldogs sweep Moundbuilders to win fifth straight

Winfield, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s volleyball team won its fifth straight match with a 3-0 sweep of KCAC rival Southwestern College Tuesday evening at the Stewart Field House. The Bulldogs won 25-21, 28-26, 25-12.

With the win, McPherson improves to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in KCAC play, while Southwestern falls to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in conference action.

“Tonight was a crucial win for us,” said McPherson’s Susan Barton. “The girls played with great focus and no matter the score, they did their jobs and we prevailed. I am extremely proud of the way we have been handling ourselves on the court. We are really playing well as a team.”

Brelynn Schloo (Salina, Kan.) paced the McPherson offense with 28 assists, eight kills, two service aces and seven digs, while Amy Neufeld (Hillsboro, Kan.) led the Bulldog hitters with nine kills on 18 total attacks for a .389 hitting percentage.

At the net, Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.) registered a pair of solo blocks to go along with her seven kills.

McPherson ran out of the gate to a 25-21 first set victory despite a .170 team hitting percentage in the opening frame. The Bulldogs upped their hitting the second set to a match-high .364 to edge Southwestern, 28-26.

Riding the momentum of a 2-0 set lead, McPherson hammered the Moundbuilders in the third, and decisive, frame 25-12.

McPherson returns to action Thursday when it visits KCAC leading Friends University. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. inside the Garvey Center in Wichita, Kan.
