Box Score McPherson, Kan. – A dominant Bulldog defense, which did not allow the Haskell offense to past midfield until late in the third quarter, smothered the visiting Haskell Indian Nations University to help the McPherson College football program earn its first win of the season in dominating fashion, 45-0 Saturday night at McPherson Stadium. The win counts as head coach Joe Bettasso first career win. 

The Bulldog defensive unit held Haskell to less than 100 yards of total offense for three quarters, while forcing three fumbles and intercepting two passes. Twenty-seven Bulldogs registered at least an assisted tackle, led by freshman defensive lineman Malik McKenzie (Grapevine, Texas) with four, including two tackles for loss and one sack.

On the offensive side of the ball, McPherson’s big play offense amassed 407 yards of total offense, an average of 5.4 yards per play.  The Bulldogs aerial attack dominated the Indians to the tune of 228 yards, while McPherson picked up 179 yards on the ground.  

Junior wide receiver Joe Middleton (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the Bulldogs with a career-high 107 yards receiving on six catches, including a long of 29 yards. Middleton added his first touchdown of the season on a fade route early in the second quarter.

Senior Shane Mascarenas (Peoria, Ariz) completed 16-of-24 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns, while Aaron Lafitte (Ironwood, Ariz.) led the ground attack with 77 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.

McPherson marched 74 yards on five plays in its first possession of the game to take an early 7-0 lead, capped by a 23 yard rush by Aaron Lafitte.

The Bulldogs continued their dominance throughout the remainder of the first quarter, notching touchdowns on two of the next three drives, extending the lead to 21-0 after the first 15 minutes.

Two second quarter touchdowns, followed by a pair of safeties and a Chris German (Lewisville, Texas) one-yard run in the third propelled MC to the 45-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.

 McPherson hits the road to open KCAC action next Saturday, Sept. 11, when the Bulldogs meet the No. 15 Friends University Falcons (0-0). Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Wichita, Kan.
