Bulldogs drop second straight game to ranked opponent

Salina, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s basketball team suffered its second consecutive loss to a ranked opponent as No. 7 Kansas Wesleyan University defeated the Bulldogs, 66-50, Saturday evening at Mabee Arena.

The loss drops MC to 4-16 overall and 2-8 in KCAC play, while the Coyotes improve to 20-1 overall and 9-1 in league action. Despite the loss, McPherson remains eighth in the KCAC standings.

The Bulldogs hung close trailing just 30-29 at the half, but Kansas Wesleyan outscored MC, 36-21 in the second half, including a 16-4 run to close the game to secure the 16-point victory. McPherson shot a season-best 46.0 percent from the field, but converted just two three-point baskets and converted only 2-of-5 trips to the foul line.

Meanwhile, the Coyotes connected on 23-of-56 (41.1 percent) of attempts from the floor and were 13-of-16 (81.3 percent) from the charity stripe. KWU forced the Bulldogs into 20 turnovers, which they turned into 25 points.

Senior guard Kristen Ozbun (Rose Hill, Kan.) tallied a team-best 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting in the loss. Ozbun’s effort moves her ahead of April Woody for third place on the all-time scoring list with 1,160 points. She has played in 98 games, including 71 consecutive starts.

Forward Danielle Ekno paced the KWU offense with 16 points, while LaCole Wilkinson tallied 12 points and three assists.

McPherson returns to action on Thursday when they host Ottawa University at 6:00 p.m.
