York, Neb. – Despite a one-point halftime advantage, the McPherson College men’s basketball team dropped an 80-93 decision to York College Monday evening at the Freeman Center in York, Neb.

With the loss, McPherson falls to 7-8 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 6-7 on the year.

In the first half, the two sides battled back and forth, but it was the Bulldogs who took a 43-42 advantage into the intermission after sophomore forward Mason Hewitt (Norwich, Kan.) connected on a jumper with nine seconds left in the period. McPherson shot a respectable 43.6 percent (17-of-39) from the field, including 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from beyond the three-point line.

However, the MC offense cooled off in the second half, while the Panthers continued their consistent attack. York finished the period outscoring the Bulldogs 51-37 en route to the 13-point victory. The Panthers finished the second half shooting 45.2 percent (14-of-31), including 8-of-16 attempts from beyond the arc.

McPherson was led in scoring by freshman guard Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) who set a career-high with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field. It marks the fifth time that Shivers has led the Bulldog offense this season. Other double figure scorers include Kasey Miller (Derby, Kan.) and Mason Hewitt (Norwich, Kan.), who both finished the game with 14 points, respectively. Hewitt also led the team with eight rebounds.

As a team, the Bulldogs finished the evening shooting 38.0 percent from the field, 25.9 percent from three-point range and 79.2 percent from the foul line.

For York, Leonard Epps had 28 points to lead the Panthers.

McPherson returns to action this Thursday when they host Southwestern College. Tipoff between the Bulldogs and Moundbuilders is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
