McPherson, Kan. –
Senior defender Whitney Smith (South Jordan, Utah) set a career-best with two goals, as the McPherson College women’s soccer team shutout the University of Saint Mary, 3-0, Saturday night at McPherson Stadium. The shutout is the second straight for the Bulldogs who defeated Central Christian earlier in the week.
 
The victory improves McPherson to 4-6-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while the Spires fall to 2-6-2 overall and 0-1-0.
 
The Bulldog offense was firing on all cylinders this evening, as McPherson tallied 16 shots, which is four better than their season average. Junior forward Rachael Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led MC with five shots, while freshman forward Geneva Gray (Littleton, Colo.) and Smith added four each.
 
Junior goalkeeper Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) earned her third shutout of the season with five saves in 90 minutes.
 
Smith got McPherson on the board at 12:40 off an assist by Gray. Gray utilized one of her patented flip throws to toss the ball approximately 10 yards from the goal line and onto the body of a streaming Smith who bodied the ball into the back of the net to give MC a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bulldogs grew their advantage to 2-0 eight minutes later when Gray notched her team leading fifth goal of the season near-post from five yards out.
 
Smith put the match to rest in the 81st minute when she nailed home a header off a corner kick from freshman forward Stephanie Cornell.
 
Kristen Edmunds and Jennifer Nye led the Spires with two shots each, while the team tallied 12.
 
McPherson continues KCAC action on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when they host Tabor College at 5:30 p.m.
