Turnovers Doom Bulldogs against Ottawa

Five Bulldog turnovers, including an interception on their final drive, proved too much, as the McPherson College football team fell, 35-21, against Ottawa University Saturday afternoon at McPherson Stadium.
 
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action, while the Braves improve to 5-2 overall and 5-0 in league action.
 
Despite the loss, McPherson showed a balanced attack with 211 rushing yards and 229 passing yards to outgain the Braves 440-362. Additionally, the Bulldogs held a 31:05-28:50 edge in time of possession.
 
Junior quarterback Jake Snodgrass (Derby, Kan.) completed 16-of-32 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns, but he was intercepted four times by the Brave defense. Snodgrass led MC with 272 yards of total offense. Snodgrass connected with senior wide receiver Joe Middleton (Phoenix, Ariz.), senior Andy Skinner (Montezuma, Kan.) and junior Julius Record (Detroit, Mich.) for his three touchdown passes.
 
Junior wide receiver Kenny Pope (Sunnyvale, Calif.) led five receivers with at least 25 yards with 55 yards receiving on two catches.  
 
Senior running back Travon Jones (Fresno, Calif.) posted his fourth 100-yard rushing game with 118 yards on 20 carries, including a 75-yard run that set up McPherson’s first touchdown.
 
Offensively for the Braves, quarterback Bobby Adamson completed 13-of-21 passes for 191 yards, while wide receiver Clarence Anderson posted three catches for 101 yards and one touchdown. Running back Michael Baer led the OU ground game with 18 carries for 84 yards and one touchdown.
 
OU struck first on its first offensive play of the game when Adamson connected with Anderson for a 45-yard touchdown reception. However, the Bulldogs answered, driving 80 yards to tie the score at 7-7. The drive was highlighted by Jones’ 75-yard run that set up a Middleton two-yard touchdown reception.
 
On the ensuing drive, Ottawa took the ball 56 yards on seven plays, culminating with a one-yard touchdown run by junior wildcat quarterback Shane Gimzo. The drive not only gave OU a 14-7 lead, but sparked a 28-0 run, as the Braves finished the opening quarter with a 35-7 lead. The run was capped by junior defensive back Donald Anderson’s 30-yard interception return for a touchdown.
 
McPherson cut the deficit to 35-14 early in the second when Snodgrass capped a nine play, 81-yard drive with a 34-yar touchdown strike to Record. The score is Record’s third consecutive game with at least one touchdown.
 
The Bulldogs added another score midway through the third on another long pass from Snodgrass, 35-21. However, the two sides found themselves locked in a stalemate for the remainder of the contest.
 
Defensively, senior linebacker Darrick Johnson (Maricopa, Ariz.) led the team with 10 tackles and one interception, while junior defensive lineman Gerald Oriol (North Port, Fla.) and senior linebacker J.L. Gomez (Prosper, Texas) chipped in with eight tackles.
 
McPherson returns to action next Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Tabor College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Joel Weins Stadium in Hillsboro, Kan.
