McPherson, Kan. – Sophomore goalkeeper
Tori Verdieck (New Castle, Colo.) posted a season-high eight saves, as the McPherson College women’s soccer team held off an aggressive Sterling College side, 1-0, Wednesday evening at McPherson Stadium.
The victory improves the Bulldogs to 7-7-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action, while the Warriors fall to 6-8-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the KCAC.
Verdieck played the entire 90 minutes between the posts to earn her second shutout of the season and improve to 3-1-0.
Despite both sides creating scoring opportunities, the match remained scoreless at halftime. However, the Bulldogs struck early in the second period on a freshman forward
Stephanie Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) free kick. Cornell struck the ball far post and just over the Warrior goalkeeper’s hands to give McPherson the 1-0 lead. The goal is Cornell’s fifth of the season and third in the last two matches.
For the game, Sterling held an 18-12 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal and 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman forward
Geneva Gray (Littleton, Colo.) led the Bulldogs with four shots, while Cornell and senior defender
Whitney Smith (South Jordan, Utah) had three each, respectively.
Forward Lacey Rhoads led Sterling with eight shots, including five on goal.
McPherson returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they host Bethany College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
