McPherson, Kan. – The Bulldogs struggled to find their offensive rhythm the entire night, as the McPherson College women’s basketball team shot just 22.1 percent from the floor in a 68-56 loss to Oklahoma Wesleyan University Saturday night at the McPherson Sport Center.
With the loss, McPherson falls to 0-1 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 1-0.
Despite the offensive struggles, sophomore guard
Kt Porter (Wichita, Kan.) scored a game-high 20 points, while freshman guard
Brittany Pittas (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) added 13 points, respectively. Junior forward
Taylor Puttergill (Tryon, Neb.) rounded out the MC top scorers with seven points.
As a team, McPherson was 17-of-77 from the floor (22.1 percent), including 4-of-18 from beyond the 3-point arch. Defensively, the Bulldogs frustrated the Eagles into 39 turnovers.
MC maintained a single-digit deficit for a majority of the first period, before the Eagles Shelby Graham hit a 3-pointer to give OWU a 29-19 lead with 23 seconds left in the opening half. However, MC answered in the closing second on a Pittas floater in the lane to make it a 29-21 Oklahoma Wesleyan lead after the opening 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs shot only 16.7 percent from the field in the first half.
The second period proved similar to the first, as the Bulldogs struggled to find the bottom of the bucket. Oklahoma Wesleyan pushed its lead out to as many as 65-40 with 4:54 left in the game. Despite the deficit, Coach Rolfs Bulldogs continued to battle and brought the score as close as 12 before the final buzzer sounded.
OWU finished the game shooting 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor and was 13-of-18 from the foul line. Shelby Graham and Dashia Hurst paced the Eagles with 12 points each.
The Bulldogs return to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 1, when they travel to Lawrence, Kan. to play Haskell Indian Nations University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (CST).
