McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s basketball team utilized a strong second half, as the No. 11 Bulldogs knocked off receiving votes Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 78-64, Saturday night at the McPherson Sport Center.
The victory improves MC to 1-0 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 0-1.
The Bulldogs finished the contest shooting 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the floor, including a 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) in the second period. Additionally, MC forced 28 Eagle turnovers and held OWU under 35 percent shooting.
Sophomore guard
Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) led three Bulldogs in double-figures with 19 points, while senior guard
Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) narrowly missed a double-double with 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Senior forward
Jordan Crawford (McPherson, Kan.) rounded out the MC double-digit scorers with 10 points, respectively.
Oklahoma Wesleyan forward Deantre Harlen led the Eagles with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
In the first half, McPherson jumped out to an early 5-0 lead following a pair of Bulldog baskets off Eagle turnovers. The advantage proved to be short lived, as OWU tied the game 14-14 with 10:48 left in the opening period. Things went back and forth between the two sides for a remainder of the half, including seven ties, as Oklahoma Wesleyan took a narrow, 34-32, lead into the break.
McPherson, however, would prove the aggressor in the second period. Momentum swung completely in McPherson’s favor, after the Bulldogs pushed their advantage to 59-49 with 7:45 left on a Shivers 3-pointer. From that point on, MC only allow the Eagles to get closer than 10 points once the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs return on action on Tuesday when they travel to Haskell Indian Nations University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan.
