Lawrence, Kan. – The No. 11 McPherson College men’s basketball team won its first road contest of the season, as the Bulldogs defeated Haskell Indian Nations University, 79-72, Tuesday night at the Tony Coffin Sport Center.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 2-0 on the season, while Haskell fell to 0-2 and dropped their second straight contest to a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent.
For the second game in a row, sophomore guard
Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) paced the McPherson offense with 18 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field, including a 3-for-6 effort from beyond the arch. In addition to scoring, Shivers pulled down a season-high five rebounds and dished out two assists. Senior guard
Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) joined Shivers in double figures with 16 points, while senior forward
Jordan Crawford (McPherson, Kan.) posted a season-high 11 rebounds in the effort.
McPherson controlled the tempo for a majority of the first half, entering the locker room with a 44-38 lead at the break. The Bulldogs, who never trailed in the contest, continued that momentum in the second period to earn the seven-point victory.
As a team, the Bulldogs shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74) from the field and 41.2 percent from the three point line. MC outrebounded the Indians, 44-35, while forced Haskell into 19 turnovers.
Jonn Garrick led Haskell in scoring with 15 points, while the Indians converted 40.3 percent (25-of-62) field goals as a team.
McPherson returns to action this weekend at the Johnson & Wales Classic in Denver, Colo.
