Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) led the Bulldogs with his second straight 20-point game as the No. 11 McPherson College men’s basketball team powered past Central Christian College (Kan.), 83-62, Tuesday evening at the McPherson College Sport Center.
 
With the victory, McPherson improved to 7-0 overall, while the Tigers slipped to 2-3 on the season.
 
Shivers led the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, while converting 10-of-14 attempts at the foul line. Additionally, Shivers hit a team-high three 3-point baskets and tied for the team lead with two steals.
 
Chris Crawford (McPherson, Kan.) joined Shivers in double figures with 12 points, while narrowly missing his first double-double of the season with nine rebounds. Crawford’s twin brother, Jordan Crawford (McPherson, Kan.) led the team with 11 rebounds.
 
Overall, McPherson hit 27-of-64 shots from the field (42.2 percent), including a 4-for-11 effort from long range. The Bulldogs also connected on 25-of-32 free throws (78.1 percent), while holding a 49-47 edge in rebounds. McPherson dished out 12 assists, while committing just 10 turnovers on the night.
 
The Bulldogs took their first lead Adam Bruner (McPherson, Kan.) layup off a Central turnover. Following a second straight Tiger turnover, Shivers connected on his first of three first half 3-pointers to give MC the early 7-2 advantage.
 
However, Central began to slowly chip away at the advantage before eventually taking a 26-25 lead when Randall Conley hit his third straight 3-pointer. Despite the swing in momentum, the Bulldogs answered on their next possession with an Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) jumper from the top of the key to spark a 9-0 McPherson run en route to a 34-26 lead with 3:59 remaining in the half. McPherson maintained a five to eight point advantage the rest of the period, as the Bulldogs entered the locker room with a 40-32 lead.
 
The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the second half behind 81.0 percent (17-of-21) shooting from the free throw line.
 
McPherson held Central to just 32.9 percent (23-of-70) shooting from the field, including a 3-for-26 effort from beyond the 3-point line. Central was 0-for12 from long range in the second period. Additionally, the Tigers shot only 50.0 percent (13-of-26) from the foul line.
 
Chris Jones led the Tigers with 17 points and 10 rebounds, respectively.
 
The Bulldogs return to action this weekend when they host Baker University and Haskell Indian Nations University at the McPherson Classic. MC opens play on Friday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. against Baker, before playing Haskell at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
