Women’s Basketball Powers Past Northern New Mexico

Led by three Bulldogs in double figures, the McPherson College women’s basketball team led from the 16:28 mark of the first half on in a 84-57 win over Northern New Mexico College at the McPherson Sport Center on Friday evening. The match was both sides first of two games in the McPherson Classic.
 
With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 3-4 on the young season, while the Eagles fall to 2-7 overall.
 
Similarly to the other games this season, sophomore Kt Porter (Wichita, Kan.) and freshman Brittany Pittas (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) paced the Bulldog offense with 15 points each. Porter finished the contest 6-of-9 from the floor, including a 2-for-4 mark from 3-point range, while Pittas was 5-for-8 from the field and matched Porter with two 3-pointers. Joining Porter and Pittas in double-digits was sophomore Madison Chambers (Wellsville, Kan.), who finished the night with 11 points, respectively.
 
Porter struck early in the first half, sparking a 16-2 McPherson run following a 3-point basket. The stretch gave the Bulldogs a 22-9 lead and forced the Eagles into a timeout. McPherson grew its first half lead to as many as 19 before closing the period up 40-24.
 
In the second half, Porter sparked McPherson during a crucial stretch after the Eagles had cut the Bulldogs double-figure lead to 55-48 following an 18-5 run. Porter connected on her second 3-pointer of the contest to set off the McPherson offense, which outscored Northern New Mexico 29-9 during the final eight minutes of the contest.
 
Overall, McPherson hit 48.5 percent (33-of-68) from the field, including 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) from 3-point range. Despite the success from the field, the Bulldogs struggled at the foul line, hitting just 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) at the line. MC also committed 26 turnovers, including 13 in the second half.
 
The Bulldogs’ stifling defense held NNM to just 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the field, including 7-of-18 from beyond the arc. Much like McPherson, the Eagles also struggled from the free throw line, converting just 34.8 percent (8-of-23) of their attempts.
 
McPherson returns to action tomorrow in day two of the McPherson Classic when the Bulldogs take on Haskell Indian Nations University at 4 p.m. (CT). This mark the second meeting between the two sides.
