The McPherson College women’s basketball team returns to regular season action Monday night, as the Bulldogs open the 2012 portion of its schedule with a matchup against York College (Neb.). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the McPherson College Sport Center.

Live video of the event will be provided by the KCAC Broadcast Network, while 96.7 FM KBBE MidKansas Radio will have radio coverage in the McPherson area. Additionally, a live audio link will be available at Macbulldogs.com.

The Bulldogs are 7-6 overall and 3-1 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play entering the New Year. In their last matchup, McPherson fell 96-37 in an exhibition contest at NCAA Division II Newman University (Kan.). MC struggled to find open looks against an aggressive Jet defense that held the Bulldogs to only 27.3 percent (15-of-55) shooting, including a 1-for-15 effort from 3-point range. Additionally, McPherson committed 25 turnovers and was outrebounded 46-29.

Despite the loss, sophomore guard Kt Porter (Wichita, Kan.) scored a team high 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting. On the season, Porter is second on the squad at 12.9 points per game. Freshman guard Brittany Pittas (Lake in the Hills, Ill.), who did not play against Newman, leads the team at 14.0 points per game.

York enters 2012 with a 3-10 record and is currently riding a five-game losing streak following a 58-66 loss against Midland University (Neb.) on Dec. 14. The Panthers last victory came on Nov. 19 when they defeated Tabor College, 64-62, on a neutral floor.

After York, McPherson returns to KCAC play on Thursday at Southwestern. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

York College (Neb.) comes to McPherson with a 3-10 record following a 58-66 loss against Midland University (Neb.) on Dec. 14. The defeat extended the Panther’s season-high losing streak to five games, including losses to the University of Saint Mary (55-62) and Friends University (44-67). YC’s last victory came on Nov. 19 when they defeated Tabor College, 64-62, on a neutral floor.

Against Midland, the Panthers shot a respectable 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field, but failed to overcome 25 turnovers and 21 personal fouls. Defensively, YC held the Warriors to only 35.1 percent (20-of-57) shooting, including a 6-for-20 effort from beyond the arc. Despite their shooting struggles, Midland converted 20-of-26 (76.9 percent) free throw attempts and scored 21 points off turnovers. Guard Sara Lincoln led York with a game-high 21 points on 6-of-16 shooting. Additionally, she was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line.

Center Mayara Santos, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, leads the team in scoring at 10.5 points per game and has scored in double figures six times this season. Santos also paces York in rebounding (8.9 rebounds per game), assists (29 total) and blocked shots (14). Against Midland, Santos posted her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Lincoln serves as the Panthers secondary scoring threat with a 9.4 points per game average. She leads the team with 17 3-pointers and a 69.4 free throw percentage (minimum 10 free throws).

As a team, York scores an average of 50.2 points per game on a 34.2 percent field goal percentage. Their opponents have outscored them by an average of 15.8 points per game. In addition to offensive struggles, the Panthers grab an average of five fewer rebounds, while committing six more turnovers than their opponent.

In their last meeting...
York, Neb. – The McPherson College women’s basketball team opened the second half with a 17-5 run to pull within three, but could not overcome the deficit as the York College Panthers handed the Bulldogs their first loss, 51-73, of the 2011 portion of the schedule Monday evening at the Freeman Center.

Following a first half that saw the Bulldogs shoot only 14.3 percent (5-of-35) from the field, including a 0-for-6 effort from beyond the three-point line, McPherson mounted a 17-5 run capped by a Madison Chambers (Wellsville, Kan.) layup off a pass from Sierra Gillespie (Chase, Kan.). The effort pulled MC within three, 30-33, with 13:00 minutes remaining.

However, four consecutive turnovers led to six Panther points as York extended its lead back out to 39-30 with a little more than 10 minutes left. YC would continue its hot shooting to extend its lead out to 22 when the final horn sounded.

Chambers led the Bulldogs with 11 points and 10 rebounds to notch her first career double-double, while Kristen Ozbun (Rose Hill, Kan.) added 10 and Brooke Weisenburger (Gardner, Kan.) chipped in eight points. McPherson shot only 26.0 percent (19-of-73) from the field, 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from three-point range and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the foul line.

York’s Keishell Paul led four Panther’s in double figures with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. Carrie Berger, Mayara Santos and Lorena Medeiros chipped in 13,12 and 11 points to round out the YC double digit scorers, respectively. On the evening, York shot 42.9 percent from the field and held a 37-29 advantage on the boards.

McPherson returns to action this Thursday when they host Southwestern College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside the McPherson College Sport Center.
