McPherson, Kan. – Despite a 10-point halftime lead, the Bulldogs converted only seven field goals in the second half, as the McPherson College women’s basketball team fell, 75-60, to Sterling College in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Thursday night.
With the loss, McPherson falls to 6-6 on the year and 2-1 in conference play, while the Warriors improve to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the KCAC.
In the first period, Sterling jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Bulldogs stormed back, including an 8-0 run with less than five minutes remaining that was capped by a
Taylor Puttergill (Tryon, Neb.) old-fashioned three point play to take a 36-22 lead with 3:36 left in the half. The Warriors, aided by three consecutive offensive fouls by McPherson, cut the lead to 40-30 at the break.
McPherson shot 48.6 percent (17-of-35) from the field in the opening half, while holding the Warriors to only 30.3 percent (10-for-33).
The second half, however, did not go in the Bulldogs favor as McPherson shot only 22.6 percent (7-for-31) in the period, including 1-for-10 from beyond the arc. Sterling took advantage of the MC slump, converting 43.6 percent (17-of-39) from the field en route to the 15-point victory.
Overall,
Kt Porter (Wichita, Kan.) led McPherson with 19 points, including 16 in the first half, while
Brittany Pittas (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) scored 15 points off the bench and Puttergill posted her first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Kinsley Hilst led the Warriors with 21 points, while Kelly Curtis added 15 points, respectively.
McPherson returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 10 when they host the University of Saint Mary. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CT).
