McPherson, Kan. – After dropping a pitcher’s duel to open the day, the McPherson College softball team tallied 16 runs over the next two games to finish the day one at the McPherson Tournament 2-1.
Following the day, the Bulldogs improve to 10-9 overall on the season.
McPherson opened the morning with a 1-0 loss to Mid-America Christian University before knocking off Central Christian College, 10-0 (five innings), and Briar Cliff University, 6-0.
Junior pitcher Katie Logan pitched a gem in game one, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out three.
Mid-America Christian’s lone run came in the top of the fifth when Ashlee Dodson opened the inning with a double to left field. She would score on MC’s lone mistake of the morning when Logan threw a wild pitch that got past freshman catcher Amanda Baxter.
The Bulldogs would make a little noise in the bottom of the sixth when Andrea Falk blasted a single up the middle, but would prove unable to score.
Freshman shortstop Payton Toepfer led the Bulldog offense with three hits in the effort.
However, in game two the Bulldogs pounded out 11 hits in a 10-0 five inning win over Central Christian College. The victory is the third time MC has defeated the Tigers this season.
McPherson tallied four runs over the first three innings, before tallying six in the bottom of the fourth. MC’s fourth frame rally was highlighted by a Falk three-run home run.
Falk earned the win pitching five innings, while allowing just two hits in the shutout.
The Bulldogs kept the offensive momentum going in game three, as McPherson shutout Briar Cliff 6-0.
McPherson jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Payton Toepfer scored on a Charger error. Toepfer originally reached base on a single to center.
Neither side generated any runs over the next three innings until a Sadie Green two-out single to center scored Logan from second base (2-0 McPherson).
The Bulldogs kept the pressure on with a four run sixth to take a 6-0 lead into the final frame. Following a single to open the inning, starter Kelsey Dutton shut down the next three hitters to earn the win.
Dutton finished the game with seven innings of work, allowing only three hits.
