McPherson, Kan. - The McPherson College softball team dropped a pair of Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference games to Ottawa University on Saturday afternoon at Wall Park. The Bulldogs dropped game one 13-4 in five innings, then lost the second game of the doubleheader, 7-0.
With the losses, McPherson fell to 20-22 on the year and 8-6 in KCAC play, while the Braves improve to 24-15 overall and 10-4 in conference.
Junior first baseman Andrea Falk (Cheyenne, Wyo.) sparked a four run McPherson second inning with her team leading seventh home run of the season. The Bulldogs scored the other three runs of the inning on RBI doubles by senior Ashley Toepfer (Crescent, Okla.) and Jamie Gilbert (Joplin, Mo.) to give MC a 4-0 lead.
Ottawa chipped away at the Bulldog advantage with a run in the fourth before blowing the game open with a 12 run fifth to take a 13-4 lead. The rally swung all momentum in the Braves favor as posed no threat in the bottom of the frame.
For the game, Falk led McPherson at the dish going 2-for-3, while Ashley Toepfer when 2-for-2. Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Dutton (Limon, Colo.) took the loss, going four innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits.
In game two, OU struck early and never looked back en route to the sweep.
Ottawa got on the board quickly, scoring three runs in the first, including a two-run home run by Myah Sprew. They added another in the fifth, then tacked on three more in the seventh to take a decisive 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs failed to get the hit when they needed it most, stranding 10 runners on base. As a team, McPherson recorded seven hits, including a pair by freshman Payton Toepfer (Crescent, Okla.).
Junior pitcher Katie Logan took the loss, allowing four runs (zero earned) on six hits in four innings of work. She stuck out five in the effort.
McPherson returns to action on Tuesday, April 26 when they host Tabor College in their KCAC regular season finale. Game one will begin at 5:00 p.m.
