Wichita, Kan. – The McPherson College softball team’s 2011 season came to a end Thursday afternoon, as the Bulldogs fell, 2-1, against the No. 2 seeded Ottawa University in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason softball tournament at Two Rivers Sports Complex.
With the loss, McPherson ends 2011 with a 22-26 overall record, while the Braves improve to 31-16 and advances to game 15 and will play the loser of No. 1 Bethany College and No. 3 Friends University.
Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Dutton (Limon, Colo.) took the loss, despite pitching a gem. Dutton allowed two runs (two earned) and six hits over six innings of work, while striking out two. In addition to pitching, she helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 effort from the plate.
Freshman third baseman Morgan Zenefski (Cheyenne, Wyo.) recorded the Bulldogs lone RBI with a single in the top of the sixth that scored pinch runner Ariel McGee (Denver, Colo.) from second. McGee was running for junior Andrea Falk who reached on a single.
Ottawa took advantage of a two out McPherson error to take a 1-0 lead on a Lyndsay Swafford single to left field.
McPherson tied the score, 1-1, in the top of the sixth, but Ottawa responded with one of their own in the bottom half to take back the one run advantage, 2-1. The Bulldogs threatened in the seventh as senior catcher Ashley Toepfer (Crescent, Okla.)doubled to right with one out. However, McPherson failed to plate the tying run.
Ottawa starter Jenny Schneider earned the victory for the Braves.
