McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s soccer team scored four goals in the opening 12 minutes of the first half en route to a dominating 7-0 win over York College (Neb.) Wednesday evening in the home opener at McPherson Stadium. The Bulldogs added two additional goals to close out the first half, before adding one in the second period.
With the victory, McPherson improves to 1-0-0 on the season, while York falls to 0-1-0.
Junior forward Brooks Walsh (Valencia, Calif.) scored a pair of goals, while freshmen Oscar Cortez (Dallas, Texas) and Heriberto Garcia (Dallas, Texas) tallied one goal and one assist apiece. Six different Bulldogs scored goals in the win.
Senior goalkeeper Blake Jett (Fort Worth, Texas) earned his first clean sheet of the year by tallying four saves in 90 minutes.
McPherson held a dominating 37-7 edge in shots, including a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal. Additionally, the Bulldogs took six corner kicks to York’s three.
Garcia opened the floodgates for the Bulldogs in the third minute when he bent a free kick into the corner of the net from 30 yards out. The scored would prove to be the game winner. Just six minutes later, Walsh added to the total pushed a failed Panther clearance inside the near post to give MC a 2-0 lead.
McPherson scored a minute later, as senior defender Kyle Smith (Wichita, Kan.) buried a Garcia corner kick for his first goal as a Bulldog. Despite the lead, MC kept up the offensive pressure to create goals by Cortez, junior Sebastian Toro (Granada Hills, Calif.) and a second by Walsh to take a 6-0 lead into the break.
MC went 15 minutes without a goal in the second half before junior Geverton Ost (Porto Algre, Brazil) scored on a ball across the face of goal by Cortez in the 60th minute.
Individually, Smith and Garcia led the Bulldogs with four shots apiece. Chris Kistenoglu, who took four shots, including one on goal, led the Panther offensive attack.
McPherson returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 when they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to play Westminster College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CST)
